What Does Sailing Have to Do With Organizing? – Everything.
My name is Teri Mendelson and I started Full Sail Organizing, in Healdsburg, California upon returning from 8 years of living and sailing around the Pacific on a 52′ sailboat. I wanted the newest chapter of my career to incorporate my past work experience with the new knowledge and skills I acquired from preparing the family to go to sea, traveling and sailing for 7 years and then returning again to a life on land. I couldn’t wait to share my personal experience of letting go and living simply with my Sonoma County neighbors. I discovered that living simply and being free of my possessions gave me a sense of freedom seldom experienced in life.
My background is in Business and Office management. I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Business Economics and proceeded to work in offices as an Administrator, Office and Operations Manager and just about everything in between. I had the opportunity to re-organize all the offices I worked in, greatly improving work flow as well as aesthetics. I thrive on paperwork and making order out of chaos, important skills for learning navigation.
After 18 years of working in offices, the opportunity to set to sea presented itself. Together with my husband, I sold the family home and small computer products reseller company and downsized to a 7x7x5 storage container and a 52′ custom sailboat. We both led full, busy lives and the drastic downsizing involved in such a move was a life changing experience. I was a natural organizer before life onboard, but what I learned from my time at sea and living in such a small space for so long, honed my organizing skills to a new level. Every aspect of sailing, from provisioning the boat to plotting our course, required extreme organization and attention to detail. I loved it. The whole experience defines who I am today; confident, capable and compassionate. Did I mention salty? As salty as a sailor can be. I’m handy with tools and enjoy working in garages and getting dirty. I’m just as comfortable rummaging around in the dark corner of your barn as I am packing up Grandma’s china. I take my work very seriously but I like to keep things light and have fun. I bring a smile and sense of humor to every job. And yes, organizing CAN be fun.
I chose the name Full Sail Organizing because it reflects my own experiences and represents the forward motion available to my clients from living organized. I believe everyone deserves to feel the freedom of getting organized and living simply.
